New to HR? Here are 5 steps to find successful talent
It is never easy starting a new job and it is even harder if you have no experience in the job field. Particularly so if you are moving into HR, as your co-workers will rely on you for support and your bosses will rely on you to fill them vacancies with great talent! But don’t be alarmed! Over at BigWig we have had our fair share of entanglements with HR departments and want to give you a guide to help secure successful talent to get your HR career rolling.
Outline your hiring needs
The first step of securing successful talent is to assess what it is precisely you are looking for. What skills, experience & values are you looking for in a potential candidate? Evaluate previous staff who have worked for the company in the same role, find out how well they operated and learn from their mistakes within their role, to try and spot holes to fill with your new list of potential candidates.
Create a list of candidates
Once you feel comfortable knowing the type of candidate that would take to your vacancy like a duck to water, start creating a list of candidates! Draft a job description to be distributed amongst job portals & networks like LinkedIn and Indeed. This should be clear and coherent, you want a potential candidate to be fully informed about the role from your job description, as well as a bit of information about the culture of your company. Now in a perfect world you should start reeling in some good candidates, but sometimes that just isn’t the case. If you find yourself in this situation, read step 3!
Hire a Headhunter!
Don’t worry if you haven’t struck gold yet, there are companies who are tailor-made to help you out of this jam, trust us we’d know. We do like a bit of shameless self-promotion now and again, but there really is no better way to source great talent than through the use of a headhunting agency. They have large databases full of high-quality workers that recruitment agencies don’t have access too, as well as the fact that they can use your hiring needs to hone down and provide you a list of candidates that we promise will be more impressive than what you will get from your job adverts. Don’t get us wrong, you can still source great talent working through the normal job channels, but if you fancy going a la carte, we recommend a headhunting agency!
Conduct your interviews
We’ve already shared our thoughts on preparing for an interview as an interviewer, which we encourage you to check out. But to summarise on how your interview should be conducted, make sure you touch on the five main forms of interview questions in order to get a comprehensive feel for the candidate. When conducting an interview try make the interview environment as comfortable as possible, asides from wanting the candidates to be relaxed to help them articulate themselves, you also want to give a good account of the company you are representing. We also implore you to have in-person interviews, as this allows you to get a tangible feel for behaviour, that isn’t possible from reading CVs
Make the offer!
If you’ve followed all of the steps we have laid out for you, we hope that you are now not only looking at a perfect candidate for your vacancy, but some very happy bosses who are impressed with their newest HR worker! Remember your offer should include all the relevant information, salary, benefits, holiday, etc. You don’t want to leave any hidden traps for the candidate, make sure they are fully aware of what is in their contract, as well as the expectations for them as a worker.
We hope this has helped you transition into your position in HR, please let us know if you enjoyed the article and if you find yourself looking for a headhunting agency to fill your vacancy, don’t hesitate to reach out!
